the story
We all love to beat the system. Any system - parking tickets, taxes, jury duty. How about death? What if there were a select few who slipped by the natural law the rest of us blindly follow? What if these few found a way, if not to beat Death, at least cheat it for a long, long time?

The Clown is one of these people. He's an eccentric fixture in the New York acting scene. A master acting teacher, his devoted students know him only as "the Clown." The Clown wears clown makeup at all times to hide his true identity. Nameless and faceless, he's been cheating Death for decades but now Death is coming to collect.

There are rules to this game. When Death comes to gather up these renegades, it has to find a natural way in. Trilbe is an Iowa girl who listens to her gut. As an actress, she literally channels her characters like a medium channels spirits. She's an open vessel and Death is about to step into her and close in on the Clown.

But Death isn't prepared for a 3rd player in the game - the New Guy. He's a Chicago actor who's come to New York to work with the Clown. He's a regular guy who has no idea he's on his way to becoming a hero. Fugitives like the Clown can't cheat Death alone. They need the help of others like them. The New Guy doesn't know it yet but he shares a common ancestry with the Clown and he's here to save him.

Fast forward: The actors retreat to a remote campsite for an intensive on Hamlet. A freak accident sets the Clown on fire in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere. It's a race now to save the Clown's life. An ambulance shows up.

Obsessed with saving the Clown, the New Guy jumps in a van and follows the rapidly disappearing ambulance. As he drives, it dawns on him that he is not alone. Trilbe is sitting in the passenger seat...or is it someone else? Even a reluctant hero has a nemesis but how long will it take the New Guy to figure out that it's sitting right next to him. It's a race for Death...Death itself. Who will get to the Clown first?
